Ready for another album? Here is a five-for-one about one of our household names, Sandra Boynton!
Sandra Boynton
Philadelphia Chickens
You may already be familiar with Sandra Boynton through her popular board books, but did you know that she has also made several musical albums? They are superlative. You can get the CDs alone or with a gorgeous hardcover book filled with Boynton's quirky lyrics, illustrations, and sheet music. We love these albums for the great combination of captivating toddler and preschooler humor and adult humor that will sail right over the kids' heads, unnoticed by them but leaving you smirking. Combine that with a smattering of all-star artists, such as Patty LuPone, Meryl Streep, Blues Traveler, and on and on...and on...and it is a coup for dual listening. In fact, these have been among our go-to road trip albums for three years now.
And if that wasn't enough, over time we noticed that several of the board books are also the lyrics to the songs! Some of our favorite books are featured, including Barnyard Dance! on the album Rhinoceros Tap and Snuggle Puppy on Philadelphia Chickens, among several others.
It has been a great way to get the kids interested in reading, and
we're planning to pull them out again as our oldest starts learning to
read. (How lovely to already know the words!)
When my son was first learning to talk, trying to sing along with Philadelphia Chickens was part of our daily routine. Even now at age four, after listening to the title song of Dog Train, my
son continues to wish for a REAL dog train for our sweet dog, Lana. Gotta love it. We have yet to get Frog Trouble and Blue Moo, but they are on our wishlist for sure. Sandra Boynton does not disappoint!
Update: It turns out you can purchase whole albums as MP3s, or just individual songs if you just want to try one. Here's the link to Snuggle Puppy.
